December is often painted as a month of magic — sparkling lights, cozy traditions, and joyful celebrations. But for many families, it can also feel overwhelming. Routines shift, schedules fill up, and children may feel the excitement and the pressure of the holiday season.
Just like in September, our goal at Head of the Class is to help families move through this month with intention, connection, and compassion. Start With Connection. Before jumping into holiday plans, school projects, or year-end expectations, take a moment to simply connect with your child. Ask them:
When children feel emotionally grounded, they respond better to changes in routine — and they show greater resilience during busy seasons. The Executive Functioning Challenge (And Opportunity) December can magnify executive functioning struggles. Forgetting assignments, feeling dysregulated, trouble shifting between events — these challenges are common as routines loosen and excitement rises. Remember: these difficulties aren’t about intelligence. They’re about skills still developing. Executive functioning can be strengthened, just like reading or math.
