Back-to-School Success Starts with Connection

By Julie Fader, Director, Head of the Class Education Centre

As summer winds down and September approaches, it’s natural for both parents and students to feel a mix of anticipation and anxiety. New grades, new teachers, and new routines can feel overwhelming—even for the most confident learners. But as I often remind the families I work with: back-to-school doesn’t have to be stressful if we focus on connection first.
Start with Routines, Not Academics

Many families worry about whether their child will be “ready” for school. But readiness isn’t just about academics—it’s about rhythm. Re-establishing consistent routines—bedtime, wake-up, meals, screen time—creates a sense of predictability and safety. Children thrive when they know what to expect. A calm morning routine or a simple evening checklist can ease transitions and reduce stress.
Reconnect Before You Redirect
Before jumping into expectations or schedules, take time to connect. Ask your child: What are you most excited about? What are you nervous about? Listen without fixing or interrupting. When children feel seen and heard, they are more open to learning and more willing to engage in new challenges.
Focus on Executive Functioning

Many of the challenges we see in the first few weeks of school—forgetting homework, difficulty focusing, emotional outbursts—are not about intelligence; they’re about executive functioning. These are the skills that help us plan, prioritize, regulate emotions, and follow through. The good news is: executive functioning can be taught and strengthened with practice and support.

This is especially important for students with ADHD, anxiety, or learning differences. At Head of the Class, we offer coaching, tools, and strategies tailored to each student’s needs. Whether it’s organizing a backpack or learning how to self-regulate during a difficult task, small wins build big confidence.
Give Yourself and Your Child Grace

September doesn’t have to be a sprint. It’s okay if your child is tired, resistant, or unsure at first. Adjusting to school is a process. Celebrate small steps—getting out the door on time, finishing the first week, making a new friend.

And remember: your child will take their emotional cues from you. When you remain calm and confident (even if you don’t feel it!), you’re modeling resilience.
Support That Sticks

One of the best things we can give our children is a team that believes in them. Whether that’s a teacher, tutor, coach, or therapist—students flourish when they feel supported. At Head of the Class, our goal is to make every child feel safe, successful, and proud of who they are.

Back-to-school isn’t just a date on the calendar—it’s a fresh start. Let’s walk into this new season with intention, connection, and hope. You don’t have to do it alone. We’re here to help.

Wishing you all a strong, supported start to the school year!
