Gather 11 counters from the math manipulative area.
Have a small white board and marker or paper and pencil Reserve the 11th counter for now. Begin the conversation like this: How many counters do we have? Let’s talk about different ways we can use two groups of these counters and add them together to make 10. Can you find a way to divide them into two groups? What are the numbers? How much do they add up to? What is the equation or number story? ( have them record it or you record it) |

After exhausting all of the possibilities with combinations to 10, show how it generalizes to tens, hundreds ect with pen and paper ie 20+80 adds to 100 like 2+8 adds to 10

- Each player gets seven cards.
- When the cards are first dealt, the players search their hands for combinations to ten. If they have them, they place them down on the desk.
- The players begin to take turns asking each other and try to make combinations to ten by asking the other player for a 2 if they have an 8 in their hand and then choosing a card from the pile if the opponent does not have the card they need.
- Have the combinations written out on the table if the student needs reminders.
