Pine Cone Bird Feeder

So many of our fine feathered friends have joined us again!
Here is an easy activity that is engaging, fun and can lead to the skill of observations!
3 easy steps, a few household items and boom! Bird feeder!

Making the Bird Feeder

Materials:
  1. 1 Large Pine Cone (I found mine on a walk in the woods)
Alternatively, toilet paper roll will do.
  1. Any kind of spreadable nut butter or nut butter alternative.
  2. Bird seed can be seeds you have, sesame seeds, chia seeds, poppy seeds, sunflower, or a conventional bird seed mixture.
  3. Kid safe spreaders for the nut butter
  4. Jute twine or compostable string
  5. Large flat bowls or plates to roll the Pine Cone or toilet paper roll.

Step 1: Slather your Pine Cone or toilet paper roll in the nut butter or alternative. The Pine Cone will take a bit more doing, careful to get it in the nooks and crannies.
Step 2: Roll your toilet roll or Pine Cone into your seed mixture.  Apply some pressure as you roll and the seeds will stick, shake off the extra.
Step 3:  Attach the jute or twine securely to the upper scales o the Pine Cone, around and under and you can make a hanging loop.  For the toilet roll you can attach string later or place directly onto a branch,
Step 4:  Place your bird feeder in a tree either in your yard or somewhere close by where you can observe the changes to the feeder over the next few days.
Step 5: Observations
Step 6: Remove and recycle the bird feeder when no longer in use.
