Volcano Experiment

Picture
The volcano experiment is an excellent example of a multi-purpose multidisciplined experiment. So many outcomes can be accomplished through this particular experiment. It is an experiment that takes place over time and requires research and preparation to accomplish.  For our learners who are needing extra support in reading we can use the volcano experiment to get them excited about looking at nonfiction we can zero in on vocabulary and on spelling.
We can also do many things with creative writing or writing response to the step-by-step process of creating their volcano.  The volcano experiment is also extremely useful with some math strands. Volume, capacity and measurement several ways are built into the experiment, from the creation of their volcano, straight through to the measurement of the materials used to create the eruption.  Of course there is the scientific component as well with the mixing of the vinegar and the baking soda creating a reaction. Research about reactions and other experiments using these materials is a natural extension of the activity.  All of the activity can be summarized through writing, drawing, graphing or through creative activities as well.

Making the Volcano

What you will need to make your volcano:
Large Plastic Bowl for mixing

500ml Flour
250 ml of salt
125 ml-175ml water
Small steal bowl
tin foil
large plate or baking sheet

1.   Mix the flour and salt in the large mixing bowl.
2.Slowly add wated until the mixture becomes thick and pasty.
3.Cover the entire small bowl in tinfoil.  Flip the bowl upside on to the large plate or baking sheet.
4.Cover the tin fiol covered bowl with the misture.  Leave a small round hole at the top to allow for the explosion.
5.Set aside to dry.  A dry warm location with sun works best.

After volcano has fully dried its time to paint!  Any fun, creative or realistic design can be painted on your volcano.
Allow to fully dry prior to eruption
