Working Memory is one of the executive functions of the pre frontal cortex in the brain. It is a part of the memory that is not considered short or long term. Most children have fairly well developed short and long term memories. However, many types of learning issues can include shorter than average capacity in the working memory. Working Memory is the part of the memory that retrieves and processes stored information quickly and holds it for a few moments. An example of this is if someone asked you orally: 6+2+3. The process by which you retrieve the numbers and manipulate them with the given mathematical sign is through the working memory. The average working memory has space for 7+ or- 2. If you consider the working memory like a park bench with a certain number of seats available, this is like a bench with roughly 7 seats. Reduced working memory has many implications for learning.
