Ooze

Picture
OOZE!! Is it a liquid or a solid?
Kid tested for years with my own son and his friends and hundreds of students, Ooze is sure to pack a punch for interest and learning excitement!
Super Easy Instructions
2 ingredients- 250 ml of corn starch and 125ml of water
Messiness level medium to high so outdoors is nice as well!

Steps for Ooze:
  1. Cover work surface and kids with protective gear- newspaper, apron or smock
  2. Measure out 250ml of corn starch into a large bowl. Allow the kids to feel the corn starch before the water is added and talk about how it feels.
  3. Very slowly add 125 ml of water, mixing with your fingers until powder is blended
  4. Keep adding water until the ooze feels like a liquid when stirring it slowly.
  5. Tap on the surface- if it splashes, add a bit more powder- if it is really solid- it is ready.

Ok dive in:
Ooze behaves differently than other substances.
Push your fingers down into the ooze quickly, then do it gently. What happens?
Next:
Pick up some ooze and squeeze it in your hand- what happens?
Open your hands and see what happens next!
You can roll the ooze, pat the ooze and even place small objects and toys on top of the ooze to see what happens.
Ooze is a unit substance and fits into a category all it’s own!

Extension: Explore other Non Newtonian fluids that you may have at home (hint ketchup, toothpaste and honey)
What are the properties of Newtonian Fluids or Newton’s ideal fluids
Pro Tip:
Don’t be tempted to use food colouring because it can stain hands and surfaces for days!!!
